09 Feb What to look for in a Trade Show Photographer
A new year of Trade Shows and Exhibitions is starting again here in Australia and there are many to choose from. Marketing managers, event planners and association directors are all looking to assign a photographer to showcase their event. But finding the right photographer for this type of work can be difficult. Although there are many photographers, with the advancement of digital photography, it takes the right kind of photographer to deliver the imagery that trade shows and expos need, to show off their event.
Trade show photography can be great for capturing the many aspects of a conference, trade show, workshop or exhibition so it’s really important to have the right person. It’s not as easy as you think though. Often at a trade show you are dealing with a variety of lighting conditions, some of which can be quite harsh. Along with that, there are often multiple events happening at the same time and sometimes at different venues. Prioritizing these events is important to make sure you capture everything required.
Photographers are also working with exhibitors on the trade show floor, so someone who is prepared to approach exhibitors and engage with them is also essential. A photographer with a bit of forethought and some branding experience is of benefit too. And someone with a bit of a personality is fantastic!
The benefit of having good photography is of course to bring more attendees to the next convention, exhibition, trade show or conference. Often the photos taken are used immediately for social media to promote the show as it is happening or in the future for advertising collateral. It is important that the photographer gets it right in camera to reduce the time spent editing the photos and has a good knowledge of Photoshop/Lightroom so they are able turn the photos around quickly.
Here are some things to look for when evaluating a photographer
- Ask for references
- Request to see some updated photos from their most recent convention including all aspects of the day, the opening reception, exhibitors stands, branding of you company, guest speakers and celebrities, group shots and candid photos of people at the event engaging.
- Ask them about back up equipment (cameras, lenses, flashes etc), laptop computers and storage of the photos.
Taking the time to ask these questions will make sure that the search for the right professional photographer at your next trade show or expo us successful.
